The Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex is the site of one of the most famous and the largest of the Adena Burial mounds. In 1838, an archaeological excavation of Grave Creek Mound, led by Jesse and Abelard Tomlinson, uncovered the ruins of two large vaults, one situated directly below the other. According to Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, a renowned geologist who visited the site in 1843, the Grave Creek Stone was discovered in the upper vault, along with seventeen hundred beads, five hundred sea shells, five copper … Located in Moundsville, West Virginia, the Grave Creek Mound, also known as the Mammoth Mound is one of the most curious ancient monuments in North America. The Grave Creek Mound in the Ohio River Valley in West Virginia is one of the largest conical-type burial mounds in the United States, now standing 62 feet (19 m) high and 240 feet (73 m) in diameter. The museum is clean and has artifacts from the mound. The Grave Creek Stone was discovered in 1838 during the excavation of the Grave Creek Mound, in Moundsville, West Virginia, on the Ohio River, about 10 miles south of Wheeling. Artifacts and exhibits interpreting the lifestyle of the Adena people are displayed in the Delf Norona Museum, adjacent to the 2,000 year old mound. The stone, an actual photograph of which appears in Figure 1 above, was a small inscribed sandstone disk, about 1 7/8" (4.8 cm) wide, and 1 1/2" (3.6 cm) high. The builders of the site, members of the Adena culture, moved more than 60,000 tons of dirt to create it about 250–150 BC. The Grave Creek Mound is a must-see if you are in or near Moundsville. Surrounding the mound and located directly at the base was a large circular ditch, 40 feet (12 meters) wide and four to five feet (1.2 to 1.5 meters) deep, with a single causeway entrance at the south. The most impressive and largest Adena mound, Grave Creek Mound is the largest conical type of any of the mound builder structures. The Grave Creek Mound is a massive structure, originally between 62 and 65 feet (approx 19 to 20 meters) high and 240 feet (73 meters) in diameter, with a flat top 60 feet (18 meters) in diameter. At first sight, it appears to be just one of many mounds we find the country, but there are several reasons why this particular mound is unique. You can walk to the top of the mound for a great view. Artifacts and exhibits interpreting the lifestyle of the Adena people are displayed in the Delf Norona Museum, adjacent to the 2,000 year old mound. The vaults contained several human skeletons and a considerable amount of jewelry and other artifacts.
